Back on April 30th, General Cigar issued a press release on the new Dunhill 1907. The introduction of the 1907 is the first new release for Dunhill since the 2001 release of the Signed Range.

According to the press release, “In the century since opening its flagship tobacco shop in London, Dunhill has remained synonymous with exquisite cigars in elegant packaging. 1907 celebrates the Dunhill brand’s time-honored tradition of tobacco mastery, while incorporating elements that speak to the modern cigar smoker’s passion points: a fuller taste profile, accessible pricing and classic sizing.

Handcrafted by artisans in Santiago, D.R., 1907 by Dunhill is made with a proprietary blend of Dominican ligeros and Brazilian Mata Fina, bound with Dominican Olor and wrapped in a hearty Honduran Olancho leaf. The new Dunhill expression delivers complex flavor with nuances of spice, and a rich, creamy finish.

1907 by Dunhill consists of these four sizes: Rothschild (4.5” x 48; SRP per cigar $8.25); Robusto (5” x 52; SRP per cigar $8.50); Churchill (7” x 49, SRP per cigar $9.25) and the box-pressed Toro (6” x 54, SRP per cigar $9.00).  Each frontmark is packaged in an 18-count wooden box with a sliding lid.”

Cigar: Dunhull 1907
Size: Robusto (5 x 52)
Wrapper: Honduras
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Brazil, Dominican
Strength: Medium
Number Smoked: 3

Appearance & Construction: Sloppy. That is the word I would use to describe the appearance of the Dunhill 1907 sticks that made it to me from General Cigar. The roll of the cigar is porous, the wrapper has a freckle like appearance to it and the caps are off-center. The bands are a nice cream color with red graphics and text denoting 1907 by Dunhill. Thankfully, from past experiences we know that an ugly duckling can turn out to be a real prince of a cigar. The foot is slightly under filled, and there are some significant veins present on the wrapper and or showing in the form of an outline from the binder.

Flavor & Notes: The cold draw has some significant notes of earth that almost make it seem like a Davidoff. The foot of the 1907 by Dunhhill as a slight nut and more of the earth notes experienced on the cold draw. As we smoke the first third there are notes of earth, coffee and wood which grows in potency as the first third is smoked. In the second third, the wood notes are dominant with a slight coffee and earth on the finish. The last third is perhaps the best part of the cigar with a nice mix of nuts, wood and earth and a subtle spice.

Burning Characteristics: The samples I smoked the wrapper had some burn issues in the beginning where the filler and binder would out burn the wrapper. In the beginning I had to work the cigar with the lighter which made it burn a little hot. The ash was extremely flaky and the burn was difficult. Around the midway point on two of the three samples I had some burn issues again where the wrapper wouldn’t keep up with the binder and file.

Conclusion: When I think of Dunhill I think of pipes and mild cigars. While Dunhill tried to change things up with a Medium bodied smoke, the burn issues were just too much to over come. The thick wrapper had some major burn issues and the flavors of this cigar were simple without any wow factor to keep me entertained.
